The Emerging Phenomenon
of Unemployed Agricultural Day Laborers
Antonieta Barrón
A MACRO VISION OF INCREASING EMPLOYMENT PRECARITY IN RURAL JOBS ( ...continuation )

The rural working population also lacks benefits, another sign of precarious labor relationships that affects working people in rural zones in all sectors. Census records corroborate the proportion of rural salaried workers lacking benefits.

One of the employment benefits that most contributes to job security is retirement savings and profit sharing. However, the highest proportions of rural working people lack these benefits.

These factors contribute to rural migration. Given that 40.8% of workers do not receive a salary, 71% receive up to two minimum wages, precarious employment oscillates around 40% and social programs are insufficient, rural families are left to develop survival strategies, one of which is migration.
